LUIE P. GARCIA, Production Designer, IATSE Local 800

Where did you grow up? I was born in Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico and lived there until I was 7. After my parents divorced, I moved to Mexico City with my mom, then to Los Angeles at age 12 to live with my dad. What are your responsibilities or roles in your department? I mainly work as a Production Designer who is in charge of the overall look of any given production. I also work as an Art Director and have worked every position in the art department while coming up the ropes through the indie world.

What made you want to work in your department? I was working as an interior designer when I was presented with an opportunity to design a "period" set for a short film competition. This small job created repeat clients which sparked my interest and made me want to learn all the tricks of the trade.

What has been your favorite project to work on? I love working on all projects that somehow help mobilize human progress in general. Particularly regarding racism, discrimination,

homophobia and abuse of any kind.

I'm passionate about shedding light on substantial issues that are tough to discuss.

Sending a valuable message is my favorite.

What inspires you? Seeing other people's passion for a script, treatment, etc inspires me. Learning the characteristics of the characters in a script inspires me. Submerging into a script and doing research also inspires me. What advice would you give someone starting out in this industry? I would tell them to never stop learning and trying new things. I would also say to take some risks, they don't always pay off but are definitely good learning experiences. Website: www.luiepgarcia.com
